The Last Waltz

Title: The Last Waltz (1978), d. Martin Scorsese
Starring: The Band and guests including Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison
Summary: Exhausted by life on the road, The Band, led by seminal guitarist Robbie Robertson, said farewell – for the time being anyway – with a massive, marathon date at the Winterland in San Francisco Thanksgiving Day, October 25, 1976. They regrouped in the ‘80s, but never topped this. Scorsese’s film record is still called the greatest concert movie ever made.
Dress: End-of-seventies chic: powder-blue suits, wide lapels, fabrics with no natural fibers. If you have any velour lurking in the back of the closet, now’s the time.
Music: More from the movie’s players: not only The Band, Clapton, Dylan and Morrison but Ronnie Wood, Muddy Waters, Dr. John and Ringo Starr.
Food: Classic American road food: burgers and dogs, fried chicken and ribs, pie and ice cream.
Drink: Go for the stuff rock stars specify for their dressing rooms: Champagne, cold beer, and – these days – herbal tea.
Farr Notes: Pass around this ready-to-print leaflet on The Last Waltz
