What's it About

When Sir Charles Baskerville is killed near his remote country mansion, the locals surmise that the curse of the Baskervilles has struck again. His heir Sir Henry (Greene) arrives from Canada and is warned by the great London detective Sherlock Holmes (Rathbone) that his life may be in danger. Holmes travels down to Devon to stake out the foreboding estate and investigate rumors of a fiendish hound loose on the moors.

Why we love it

This adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s 1901 novel is the first to pair Rathbone and Bruce as the savvy sleuth and his trusted friend; they would go on to make 13 more Holmes films together. Filmed on sets in Hollywood, but brimming with foggy, damp ambience, the mystery boasts an impressive secondary cast of suspicious characters. But Rathbone is the one to watch with his iconic, impeccable incarnation of the archly analytical logician. It’s elementary!
