Start a Movie Club
It’s fun and brings you closer to your friends. Whether you program a series or let everyone name favorites, Best Movies by Farr is here to help.Interactive Approach An alternative to a set series is to solicit member input. Let each choose two films from Best Movies by Farr, your assurance of quality control. (Read more about how BMBF titles are selected.) Have the whole club look up the titles and vote a top five for screening. Very democratic!
Choreographing the Evening It’s best to serve dinner after the film, hors d’oeuvres and a drink beforehand. Try not to view a movie on a full stomach unless the food or the film are particularly light. Holding off keeps people awake and fuels dinner conversation. Another fun option: before the screening, ask a trivia question whose answer is concealed within the movie. Award a DVD prize afterwards to whomever answers correctly. Juicy movie trivia is rife on the Internet Movie Database, and DVDs on Amazon Marketplace often sell for less than the price of a single movie theater ticket!
Sharing Entertaining Duty You should enjoy your movie club evenings as much as your guests. The person who selects or “sponsors” the film should take on the task of bringing a main course and coordinating snacks, sides and dessert with other members.(At the Farr household, unless it’s our turn to pick a film, we provide only liquid refreshment. Good friends feed us!) If your screenings move around to different members’ homes, the same rules apply Even if you program a set series, rotating food and drink responsibilities gives everyone a way to contribute.
Prompts for Discussion To help crank upthe post-movie discussion, these prompts usually spark interaction. The trick here is to keep things from getting too formal or academic. First and foremost, this should be fun. What was the intended message of the film, and was it effectively delivered? Do you agree with or relate to that message? How did the movie make you feel? Were there any shaky plot points or other elements that detracted? If you’d seen it before, was it as you remembered? Had you heard of the film, and was it what you expected? Who was your favorite character? Least favorite? Who gave the best performance? Would you recommend or show it to other friends? What did you think of the shooting style/cinematography?
