What It's About:
This omnibus collection features 41 Oscar-winning and all-time favorite Warner Bros. and MGM cartoon classics from the ‘40s and 50s, all in crisp new transfers. In addition to the rambunctious antics of Tom & Jerry, Speedy Gonzalez, Bugs Bunny, and the rest of the gang, you’ll find plenty of crazed rarities and extra features to keep your mood high.
Why I Love It:
By today’s standards, the cartoons collected here (“Duck Amuck,” “For Scent-imental Reasons,” “What’s Opera, Doc?”) are not just witty, wild, and funny, they’re downright insane. Of course, some may offend contemporary attitudes, since booze-swilling, cigar-chomping, and insensitive ethnic depictions are all part of the Looney Tunes milieu. But Oscar-caliber animators like Jones, Fleischer, and Avery were true visual artists who pushed hand-drawn animation to its outermost limits, and their best work expressed the anxieties of their time with gut-busting, madcap glee.
