What It's About:
Renowned, married violinist Holger Brandt (Howard) returns from concert tour, and meets Anita Hoffman, his daughter's piano teacher (played by Bergman in her first English-speaking role). He first takes a professional interest in her, which soon becomes more personal. With all that stands in their way, is their love meant to be?
Why I Love It:
This short (just 70 minutes), tender romance retains a special purity. Bergman, who played the same role in a Swedish version, is breathtaking, while Howard exudes the old world charm of a classic British gentleman. Their subtly intense interactions are punctuated by some very lovely music. All in all, romance with a capital "R."
