What It's About:
Shipwrecked Corporal Allison of the U.S. Marines (Mitchum) washes ashore somewhere in the Pacific during World War II. Fearful of finding Japanese soldiers, he is surprised to discover the island’s sole inhabitant is a beautiful young nun, Sister Angela (Kerr). The two want to rejoin their American allies but are thwarted by the arrival of Japanese troops. With escape uncertain, the two shyly befriend each other. When Allison's feelings turn romantic, obvious complications arise.
Why I Love It:
This moving depiction of unlikely romance blossoming under perilous conditions is a tour-de-force for its actors and director, with Kerr and Huston deservedly getting Oscar nods. Mitchum subtly conveys the gentleness beneath the marine’s rough hewn façade, while Kerr manages at once to be perfectly chaste and totally enchanting. Their mutual attraction is palpable, and the war storyline creates plenty of nail-biting tension. Heaven knows this overlooked gem is well worth viewing!
