What It's About:
Weir's film details one Australian army unit's tragic progress in the Great War, leading up to the climactic Battle of Gallipoli in Turkey. As much a story of friendship as anti-war drama, actors Lee and Gibson respectively play Archy and Frank, two idealistic young men who become part of the ill-fated campaign to seize the Dardenelles from Axis forces.
Why I Love It:
A brilliant, deeply moving re-staging of the World War I invasion and battle of Gallipoli by Australian-New Zealand troops, a young Mel Gibson stands out in a superb Australian cast, and director Weir expertly evokes time and place, using his camera to send the unspoken message: "Never forget." Unquestionably one of the finest anti-war films ever done, and don't miss that unforgettable finish.
