What It's About:
Subjugated by the Draags, a race of 40-foot blue aliens, the humanoid Oms live like enslaved pets on the far-away planet of Ygam. A struggle for equal rights ensues, however, when an Om named Terr escapes and begins to organize his fellow creatures for a revolt.
Why I Love It:
Winner of the Grand Prize at the 1973 Cannes Film Festival (unprecedented for an animated motion picture), Laloux's mesmerizing sci-fi classic still hits the mark with its affecting mix of trippy graphics and progressive politics. Plus, Roland Topor's psychedelic art and Alain Goraguer's eerie, futuristic soundtrack are landmarks of their own merit, underscoring Laloux's imaginative allegory about totalitarian society. Adventuresome movie lovers, visit this planet!
