What It's About:
As an Allied platoon led by Sergeant Tyne (Andrews) prepares to assault an Italian farmhouse occupied by Nazi soldiers, each of the soldiers under his command dwells on his personal background and the dangerous task that now faces them.
Why I Love It:
Scripted by Robert Rossen from a novel by Harry Brown, “Sun” follows an American troop on their march to a rustic Nazi hideaway outside Salerno (their motto: “Nobody dies”), with each of the G.I.’s (Conte, John Ireland, Lloyd Bridges) having a chance to narrate his inner feelings and concerns about war, death, family, longing, and duty. Captivating in its quiet, lyrical meditation, the film’s standout performance comes from Huntz Hall, a grunt who delivers an extraordinarily insightful monologue about the complexity of leaves versus the human body. A combat film like no other!
