With tens of thousands of titles at your fingertips the key question is not “What’s out?” It’s “What’s great?” You’ve only got so many hours for movies. With Best Movies by Farr you make the most of them. Core Beliefs Movies are the most potent storytelling vehicle we have. And the best movies: Are as ageless as great music and art Tell human stories that make us think and feel Transcend time and cultural borders, connecting with audiences everywhere May demand effort from viewers but offer greater rewards Warrant repeat viewings – it’s better to see a great movie again than an average movie once
Selection Criteria for BMBF Titles To reach the BMBF queue a movie: Must be a full-length narrative or documentary film Must have some positive word-of-mouth among viewers and critics Must satisfy John Farr’s criteria: Are the story, script, acting, and direction of fundamental quality? Does the director establish a visual style, using the camera to convey imagery, mood, and nuance? Is overall execution original and distinctive? Does the title deserve more attention?
If a film excels as a whole – if it achieves what it sets out to do exceedingly well – chances are it’s a Best Movies by Farr selection. If it’s not, let us know.
New York's Movie Concierge

In a clear, engaging way, John Farr can synthesize movies and the media like no one else.

After Princeton, he began his career at Ogilvy Advertising, where he branded and sold everything from tissue paper to the "I Love New York" Campaign.

After close to twenty years in the business, John left to pursue what he’s always loved most: uncovering and promoting the best of film, old and new.

In 2003, he helped re-launch the Avon Theatre in Stamford, CT., a not-for-profit, restored landmark cinema, showing the best of independent, foreign and classic films, and also began writing the weekly "DVD Detective" column for The Stamford Advocate.

At the Avon, he has hosted events where he interviewed the likes of Robert Altman, Arthur Penn, Gene Wilder, Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward, Chevy Chase, Barry Levinson, and Tim Robbins, among others.

With a multi-media enterprise, Best Movies by Farr, John promotes outstanding film via lectures and this website which already features over 2,300 movie recommendations, with direct links to Netflix and Amazon.

John writes a popular weekly film blog for the Huffington Post, has appeared on CNN, NBC, and The Ron Reagan Show, and has produced over 200 short-form videos containing themed film suggestions. These videos reside on this site, as well as on PBS’s “Reel 13” program website.
